James Frechette, owner of the Applause Dance Factory in Ridgeland, MS, will teach classes in ballroom, latin, country/western, and swing dance. Individuals and couples are welcome. Join us in the SCHF Auditorium on Tuesday, June 8th for 19th Century humor, music, and instruments of riverboats, minstrel shows, and the big top. Clarke Buehling will present a classic banjo performance along with African and Celtic American tunes and lyrics demonstrating the roots of American popular music. MISSISSIPPI ART COLONY
Reception Friday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Mississippi Art Colony is the oldest of its kind in the nation, drawing on artists in varied media from Mississippi and neighboring states. This Traveling Exhibit is comprised of selections chosen in the Mississippi Art Colony's annual juried competition. The exhibit will be housed in the SCHF Academy building. SCHF is still accepting children for the Vicksburg Multicultural Arts Camp. Children ages 7-12 will discover the art, dance, music, and cuisine of many of the cultures of Vicksburg including Lebanese, African American, Irish, and French/Cajun. Students will have the opportunity to learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others. The camp will be led by veteran art educator Nancy Mitchell. The $35 fee for the camp includes all supplies and a snack each day. The program will culminate with a televised program and exhibit open to the community at noon on Friday, June 11. Please call today for reservations! GENEALOGY FOR BEGINNERS

12 Beth Freshour, librarian and genealogist, will intro-duce basic skills of researching, documenting, and passing on your family histories. Bring in family materials for guidance in your own search. There is no charge for this workshop thanks to the generosity of the Mississippi Humanities Council's Speakers Bureau. The workshop will be in the SCHF Academy Building, please use the Adams Street Entrance.
The Southern Book Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month. There is no fee and it is open to the public. New members are welcome.

The June meeting of the Southern Book Club will feature a special guest appearance by Allen Huff-man, the author of Mississippi in Africa. Huffman will lead the discussion as well as give background to the writing of his novel regarding the true story of slaves who fled Mississippi to establish a new home in Africa. Huffman will be available to answer questions and sign copies of the book. For more information, please call the SCHF office.
Author Reading & Book Signing Tuesday, June 29 at 6:00 p.m. Paul Canonici, author and son of Italian immigrant parents in the Delta, will give readings from his newly published book, The Delta Italians, a gathering of stories, facts, and experiences of the early Italian settlers of the Arkansas and Mississippi plantations. The reading will be in the SCHF Academy Building. Please use the Adams Street entrance. |
