(Vicksburg)  Dr. Carolyn Ware will speak on Rural Cajun Mardi Gras on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex’s (SCHC) Convent.

Dr. Ware is the coordinator of the Pine Hills Culture Program at the University of Southern Mississippi and coauthor of the book, Cajun Mardi Gras Masks.  She has served as a consultant and folklorist for such projects as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Louisiana Folklife Festival, and the Festival of American Folklife.  Dr. Ware recently produced a PRM radio series called “Passing It On” that explored the aspects of Piney Woods Folklife.  Sponsored by the USM’s Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage, the Pine Hills Culture Program is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and presenting traditions and folk culture of the South’s Pine Hills region.

“Cajun culture is such an important part of the South’s legacy,” stated SCHF director Ted Smith.  “We welcome this exciting event to the SCHF.”

The presentation is part of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s (SCHF) Humanities Lecture Series, which takes place on the third Thursday of every month.  The Southern Cultural Heritage Complex’s (SCHC) Convent is located at the corner of Adams and Crawford Streets in Downtown Vicksburg.  A reception will immediately follow the lecture.  The event is free and open to the public.  For more information call (601) 631-2997 or visit the SCHF website at www.southernculture.org.
