(Vicksburg)  In honor of Black History Month, Dr. Charles Ross will speak on “African Americans and the Integration of the NFL” on Thursday, February 15, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex’s (SCHC) Convent.

Dr. Ross is an Assistant Professor of History and Afro-American Studies at the University of Mississippi.  His book, Outside the Lines:  African Americans and the Integration of the National Football League, tells the story of the civil rights movement in the National Football League.  The integration of the NFL to include both black and white athletes occurred before the judicial system changed the integration laws.  Dr. Ross shows how this integration of players in a sport parallels the civil rights movement and integration into other areas of life.

“We are extremely pleased to have Dr. Ross take part in our Humanities Lecture Series,” stated SCHF director Ted Smith.  “Dr. Ross’s talk is a wonderful addition to the programming we offer here.”

The presentation is part of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s (SCHF) Humanities Lecture Series, which takes place on the third Thursday of every month.  The Southern Cultural Heritage Complex’s (SCHC) Convent is located on the corner of Adams and Crawford Streets in Downtown Vicksburg.  A reception and book signing will immediately follow the lecture.  The event is free and open to the public.  For more information call (601) 631-2997 or visit the SCHF website at www.southernculture.org.
