The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation presents “Speak Up!” A
Communication Class for Kids. This day camp will be held January 6th-8th
from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (held during the VWSD intersession week). The
camp is open for children in 4th-6th grade. The registration fee is $135 per
child and includes supplies, materials and snacks. Students will need to
furnish their lunch each day.
During this unique camp, children will learn to speak confidently and relate
better to friends, family, and adults. Students will develop speaking and
communication ability while having loads of fun! This course will enhance
public speaking, confidence, self-esteem, leadership ability, and manners
(beyond “please” and “thank you”!)
Children, both outgoing and shy, will develop at their own pace with plenty
of positive encouragement. This course is led by professional motivational
speakers, Sharonda Medina and Kim Stribling (www.saylegacy.com).

Quilting professional Diane Jordan will lead a Children’s Beginner Quilting
Workshop on January 7th from 8:30 a.m. – noon. Students will work with
fabric to create a charm square quilt. Moms are welcomed and encouraged to
accompany their child to this fun-filled time of learning and being
creative.
Registration is required as space is limited to 12 participants.
Registration for this class is $65 and includes the quilting fabric kit.
Materials required for this workshop include a small pair scissors, a seam
ripper, neutral thread, a large zip lock bag, and a sewing machine. A
limited number of sewing machines are available for rent for $20 and must be

Ballroom
Dance
presented by James Frechette
The
SCHF offers monthly ballroom dance classes. James Frechette, owner of
Applause Dance Factory in Ridgeland, teaches classes in ballroom, Latin,
swing and many other styles of dance. This month the dance will be the
Foxtrot.
Class will meet Sundays, January 11 and 25 from 5 - 7 p.m. in
the academy building.
Both individuals and couples are welcomed. The fee is $20 per
person for each two hour session. For more information, please call the SCHF

Students
will work with fabric to create a beautiful quilt for the winter season.
This workshop will be led by quilting professional, Diane Jordan.
Registration is required as space is limited to 12 participants.
Registration for this class is $190/SCHF members and $220/non-members and
includes all the quilting fabric kit supplies. A 50% deposit is required at
registration. Students will need to supply their lunch. Soft drinks, water
and dessert will be provided.
Materials required for this workshop include a sewing machine with 1/4 inch
sewing foot, small pair of scissors, steam iron, neutral thread, a large zip
lock bag, and a heavy duty extension cord. A limited number of sewing
machines are available for rent for an extra $20.

The
Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month.
There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public. The group focuses on
Southern authors and subjects, but is open to any good read. Book and author
suggestions are welcomed.
For January, the book club will discuss Junior Ray by John Pritchard.
The Southern Book Club will meet at 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, January 21,
2009.

River
Kids, the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s free after-school art
program, will begin on January 29th. Open to any child in 1st through 6th
grade, this program will accept a limited amount of students for the class
on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:00 p.m.
The program is free, but will require a full semester
commitment from the parents. It will be filled on a first come, first served

This free after-school program is supported in part by
funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part,
from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the generous

Piano Workshop coming to the SCHC
Featuring internationally known
soloist, accompanist, adjudicator and teacher, Ian Hominick
The
Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation proudly welcomes Ian Hominick as he
presents an educational piano workshop on Saturday, January 31st at
10:00am. The focus of the workshop will be "the music-making process or
music choreography." Ian will perform and talk about the pieces he plays.
This event is free and open to anyone who enjoys piano music. Donations
will be accepted.
Ian Hominick began studying piano in his native
Nova Scotia at the age of seven. He attended Mount Allison University in
the province of New Brunswick where he was a student of Jamie Syer and
Patricia Elliott. Continuing his studies in the United States under the
tutelage of internationally acclaimed pianists,
Jerome Rose and
Earl Wild, he earned the Doctor of
Musical Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1991. Ian has gone on to
establish a solid reputation as a first-rate pianist and one of today's most
popular artists. His performances help to bridge the gap between performer
and audience.
Mr. Hominick premiere solo
recording of the
works of the legendary romantic pianist, Sigismund Thalberg, was released by
Titanic Records in 1995 to glowing reviews from the critics and a nomination
for "Best Classical Recording" in the East Coast Music Awards. A dedicated
teacher, Mr. Hominick has been Visiting Artist at the University of
Newfoundland and has taught on the faculties of Otterbein College, the
Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, De Paul University and Lake Forest
College. He has also served on the national piano jury for Canadian Music
Competitions. Mr. Hominick joined the piano faculty at the
University of Mississippi
in 1999 and is founder and Artistic Director of
The Piano Series
at Ole Miss and the
Piano Discoveries
Summer Camp. He resides in Oxford, Mississippi with his wife, Jeanne,
and their three young children.
