Mini Monday Art Camp

The children’s multicultural art camp is a lot of fun, but it is only one week during the summer. In order to keep the fun going all summer long, we are bringing back the successful Mini Monday Art Camps!

Every Monday during the months of June and July from 3 - 4 p.m. we will host the mini camps in the Academy Building. Please use the courtyard entrance.

Students will work on a variety of art projects during the summer including painting, collage, crafts, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture.

All workshops will be led by qualified educators including instructors from our after-school program and both adult and student workshops throughout the year.

Students do not have to commit to all sessions. They may attend as few as one class or they may attend all classes.

Classes are open to any child age 6 to 12. A $5 fee per child, per session covers all materials. Reservations are not required, but are suggested to help better prepare for class size and planning.

For more information or for registration, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997 or stop by our office at 1302 Adams Street anytime.

Art Workshop: Introduction to Ceramics

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation will offer Introduction to Ceramics this month in our ongoing adult summer art class series. The four session class will be in the SCHF Academy Building on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 18, 20, 25, and 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Pottery has been a popular medium for thousands of years. It is a relaxing hobby and a rewarding art form with a lasting outcome. This introductory workshop will include a bit of art history and instruct participants on the fundamental skills of building and glazing ceramics. Along with different techniques, participants will create, fire, and glaze a hand-built bowl.

Local artist, Daisy Anderson, will lead the workshop. Born to a family of artists in Richton, Mississippi, Daisy now makes her home in Vicksburg. She is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelors of Fine Art in Sculpture and Ceramics. When not creating pottery at home, she is employed as an art instructor with the Jackson Public School System.

Reservations are required for the class. The fee for the class is $35 for SCHF members and $40 for non-members. Space is limited, so call today! To register, or for more information, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997 or stop by anytime at 1302 Adams Street.

Southern Book Club

The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public. The group focuses primarily on Southern authors and subjects, but is open to any good read. Book and author suggestions are welcomed.

For July, the Southern Book Club will not meet, but will resume in August.

For August, the club will discuss The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron and Lucia Graves at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16.

Please call the SCHF office for meeting location or for more information.

Ballroom Dance

The SCHF offers monthly ballroom dance classes. James Frechette, owner of Applause Dance Factory in Ridgeland, teaches classes in ballroom, Latin, swing, waltz, and many other styles of dance.
