December 2006 November 2006 2006 SCHF Annual Meeting and Luncheon will be held on November 8 at noon in the SCHF Auditorium. This year’s guest speaker will be David Morgan, the Mississippi Humanities Council Smithsonian exhibit coordinator for the for the upcoming summer 2007 New Harmonies Exhibit. The cost is only $10, in advance or at the door. Reservations are requested on or before November 6 to the SCHF office at 601-631-2997 or by e-mail. Ballroom dance classes are offered twice during October, on Sundays, October 1 and 15 from 5 - 7 p.m. October classes will study East Coast Swing. The Children's Show Choir music program, each Tuesday from 3:45-5:00 p.m. this fall, will teach children basic music and vocal skills, as well as movement, choreography and performance skills. The program is open to any child interested in singing and performing. The program is free and open to the public. (The Children's Show Choir program is now full.) The River Kids After School Art Program, each Thursday from 3:45-5:00 p.m., is designed to encourage children to discover and develop their creative talents. This year, the program is open to all children in 1st through 6th grades. (The River Kids After School Art Program is now full.) Vicksburg's Fall Pilgrimage will begin with a kickoff event and art exhibit at the SCHF Cobb House on Thursday evening, October 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. An art exhibit of "old meets new" photographs by Tom Pharr, owner of Anchuca, will be on display, along with a champagne and dessert reception. Pharr has photographed "unique nuances" at each of the 15 properties participating in pilgrimage. The $25 ticket for the event can be purchased at the door, or in advance at any of the Fall Pilgrimage participants: the Martha Vick House, SCHF Cobb House, Mary Harwood House, Cedar Grove Mansion, Belle of the Bends, Christ Episcopal Church, Anchuca Mansion, George Washington Ball House, Baer House, Shlenker House, Annabelle, Duff Green Mansion, The Governor's Inn, and Stained Glass Manor. Fall Pilgrimage will be every Friday through Sunday throughout October. Admission is $6 per person per tour site, paid at each tour site. The fall schedule will include evening ghost tours of select properties. The Cobb House will be open for tours every Friday in October from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. If you are interested in being a volunteer tour guide, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997. Come and learn the basics of floral design in SCHF's Fall Floral Design Workshop on Tuesday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. in the SCHF academy building. Southern Book Club: Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral by Kris Radish at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18. The Arts Blitz held at SCHF was a huge success! During the two week blitz, children of all ages joined art teachers and volunteers to create 100 mural panels to be installed at the Children's Art Park at Catfish Row. The panels will be returned to the City for a protective coating then installed in the Art Park at Catfish Row for all to enjoy! September 2006 August 2006 Mark your calendars now to be in town for Vicksburg’s Independence Day Celebration Southern Style! The multi-day celebration will be filled with concerts, comedians, and spectacular fireworks over historic downtown Vicksburg. Watch for more details soon! Mini Monday Art Camp: Every Monday during the months of June and July from 3 - 4 p.m., students will work on a variety of art projects including painting, collage, crafts, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture. Art Workshop: Introduction to Ceramics will offer four session class in the SCHF Academy Building on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 18, 20, 25, and 27. This introductory workshop will include a bit of art history and instruct participants on the fundamental skills of building and glazing ceramics. Impress Without the Stress, Creative Side Dishes for Summer Entertaining, the first of a new series of cooking workshops led by Kristin Gluck, will be held in the SCHF Academy Building on Tuesday, June 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Gluck will be offering four seasonal cooking workshops over the course of the year at SCHF. Ballroom dance classes are offered twice during June, on Sundays, June 18 and 25 from 5 - 7 p.m. Southern Book Club: The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21. Senior citizens and volunteers of the Vicksburg Senior Center have been working hard all year to produce a new cookbook, Senior Moments: A Collection of Recipes, Antidotes, and Short Stories. The book will be debuted at a reception open to the public in the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium on Friday, June 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Adult Art Workshop: Watercolor for Beginners. Come and learn the basics about watercolor paint, paper, and techniques in a casual and fun setting with Jeanne Evans. The workshop will be Saturday, June 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the SCHF academy building. SCHF is proud to bring back the Vicksburg Multicultural Arts Camp for children June 26 - 30 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. During this unique camp, children discover the art, dance, music and cuisine of a different culture each day, culminating with a public performance and exhibit on the last day in the SCHF Auditorium. Space is limited and reservations are required. SCHF is in need of summer volunteers. No matter what your interests, we have a place for you. Vicksburg Chamber Choir Spring Concert, Tuesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium. The concert features a variety of choral music, mainly by 20th Century American composers. Free admission; donations accepted. Poster. Mississippi Art Colony 2006 Traveling Exhibit in the Cobb House May 8-26. This exhibit displays winners of the Mississippi Art Colony juried competition featuring artists in varied media from Mississippi and neighboring states. River Kids After School Art End of the Year Program May 11. Southern Book Club: The Hounds of Winter by James Magnuson at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17. Spring in Vicksburg always brings the annual Lebanese Dinner at Saint George Antiochian Orthodox Church. Crowds of Vicksburg residents line up early for the annual chance to taste authentic Lebanese cuisine. This year, SCHF is pleased to welcome Mary Louise Nosser to teach a cooking class on Saturday, May 20. Ballroom dance classes are offered twice during May, on Sundays, May 21 and 28 from 5 - 7 p.m. The Staff and Board of Directors of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation would like to formally thank the members of the Green Hills Garden Club again for their continued commitment and time volunteering to plant and maintain the courtyard flower beds. Humanities Lecture Series — Iraq: The People and the Possibilities, April 18 at 6:00 p.m. Charlie Mitchell, Executive Editor of The Vicksburg Post, will present a lecture about his March 2006 visit to Iraq when he spent three weeks embedded with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The SCHF will feature our newly restored Cobb House during Vicksburg’s Spring Pilgrimage. The sixth annual Vicksburg International Chamber Music Festival in coordination with the University of Southern Mississippi presents the first concert of the Spring 2006 concert series in the SCHF Auditorium on Saturday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Vicksburg International Chamber Music Festival will hold events from Saturday, March 25 through Sunday, April 2. Financial Workshop, every Tuesday from February 7 through March 14 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Southern Book Club: The Neon Rain by James Lee Burke at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15. The New Orleans chapter of the American Harp Society presents Merci, An Evening of French Harp Music on Thursday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the SCHF Auditorium.
