8th Annual Holly Days Arts and Crafts Show Saturday, December 5, 2015 in the historic SCH Auditorium from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Admission to the show is $1. Holly Days will feature an assortment of vendors showcasing their products plus local talent will entertain the attendees. This event will precede Vicksburg Main Street’s Annual Christmas Parade of Lights at 5 p.m. The live entertainment will include Riverpointe Dance Students (9am-9:45am), Jeanne Evans Music Students (10am-10:45am), the Mississippi Girlchoir (11am-11:45am), Debra Franco Preparatory School of Dance (12pm- 12:45pm), Dance From the Heart (students from Jacob’s Ladder) (12:50pm), Judy Buys Music Students (1pm-1:45pm), and Church of the Holy Trinity, Conservatory of the Fine Arts Student Orchestra (2pm- 2:45pm). “A Christmas to Remember” performed by the Vicksburg Orchestral Society and the Mississippi Girlchoir, Sunday, December 13, 2015. Seating will begin at 4:30 p.m. Dinner and the performance will begin at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person. Reservations are required. Tables may be reserved for groups of two, four, or eight. The Southern Book Club, Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. In December, the monthly book is A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas. Dylan Thomas, one of the greatest poets and storytellers of the twentieth century, captures a child's-eye view, and an adult's fond memories, of a magical time of presents, aunts and uncles, the frozen sea, and in the best of circumstances, newly fallen snow. Period Time Promotional Filming presents Mrs. James T. Hamilton “In the mind of a Southerner,” Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., a 70 minute, 19th-century oral interpretation of southern living. Mrs. J. T. Hamilton is a fictional character, woven around historical context of the day. Often humorous and touching, she offers a unique perspective on city and plantation life in Antebellum Vicksburg, Mississippi. Katrina, Mississippi: Voices from Ground Zero, lecture and book signing with NancyKay Sullivan Wessman in the SCHC Convent Chapel, Tuesday, November 10th at 6:00 p.m. The 10th anniversary commemorative book showcases heroes and their work from the epicenter of preparedness, response, rescue, recovery and rebuilding. Theirs are stories about human suffering and survival. Author NancyKay Sullivan Wessman is a veteran journalist and public health expert. She will also be signing books. SCHF Annual Meeting & Luncheon with guest speaker David Keary, Artistic and Executive Director of Ballet Mississippi, Friday, November 13th at noon. Tickets are $15/person and reservations must be made in advance.
David Keary began his ballet training with the Jackson Ballet as the first professional dancer under the direction of Thalia Mara. He has danced with the New York City Ballet and the Forth Worth Ballet, and later returned to Mississippi. He completed his undergraduate studies at Millsaps College and received a Juris Doctorate from Mississippi College School of Law. In 1994, Keary transitioned and restructured Ballet Mississippi from a professional company into a professional school. Warren Central High School Choral Department presents A Madrigal Dinner and Singe Feaste, Thursday, November 19th, Friday, November 20th, and Saturday, November 21st, 2015 at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium. 27th Annual Over the River Run, Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 8am at the Old Mississippi River Bridge located at I-20 and Washington Street. This unique run follows a scenic course heading west across the Mississippi River to Delta, Louisiana and then returns back to the finish line. The event includes a 5-mile run, 5-mile walk, and a one-mile fun run for kids.

Vicksburg Chamber Choir Courtyard Concert, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 11. Selections will feature the choral group accompanied by a talented group of instrumentalists, vocal solos and instrumental solos. River Kids Free After School Art Program Fall Semester will begin on August 20, 2015. Open to any child in 1st through 6th grade, the program will accept 60 students for the class on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:00 pm. It will expose creativity through drawing, painting, crafts, collage, ceramics, sculpture and many more exciting techniques. “Let’s Dance” Vicksburg Ballroom Showcase, Sunday, August 30th at 2:00pm in the SCH Auditorium. Dance students will perform the Bolero, Waltz, Argentine Tango, Foxtrot, Rumba, and West Coast Swing dances with instructor, James Frechette, involving great music and individual costumes. Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest, July 6-10, 2015. The contest is open to kids ages 11-13. Admission is free and participants are required to meet July 6-10 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. Students will be guided by art instructor, Karen Biedenharn, to complete their posters. Three winners will be chosen by judges for cash prizes. Posters are evaluated on the following three criteria: originality, artistic merit, and expression of the theme. All work must be original and completed only by the student participant. Art Contest prizes are 1st Prize- $75, 2nd Prize- $50, 3rd Prize-$25. Representatives from the Vicksburg Art Association will judge the works of art and winners will be announced. SCHF Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant. The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.61 million in grants the Commission will award in 2015-2016 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. These funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, the huge variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas. The annual Vicksburg Multicultural Arts Camp, July 13-17, 2015 from 8 a.m.-noon for ages 6-12. Registration fee $50 per child. Includes all supplies, materials, and a daily snack. During this unique camp, children discover the art, dance, music and cuisine of a different culture. By studying cultural differences and similarities through the arts, students will learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others. This year we are pleased to welcome Karen Biedenharn, art instructor, and Christie Beasley, music teacher. Mississippi Blues Commission: Promoting and Supporting the Blues by Dr. Edgar Smith, Monday, July 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the SCHF Convent Chapel. Dr. Smith will discuss the Mississippi Blues Commission and how we can help support the blues. Many of the most important historical sites associated with the blues are located in Mississippi, and the state's Blues Trail, established in 2005, has to date erected nearly 200 markers documenting this cultural significance. “If you actually experience going around [to] some of these communities,” says Dr. Smith, “you see that there are a number of these musicians who are really in bad shape financially...” In 2010, the Mississippi Blues Commission set up the Blues Musicians Benevolent Fund which is supported primarily by the sale of Mississippi Blues Trail license plates, a $10,000 yearly gift from the Mississippi Blues Marathon, and private donations. 4-Day Stained Glass Workshop, Monday-Thursday, June 22-25, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with Father Mark Bleakley. This workshop will teach the student how to build a small stained glass panel using the Tiffany style (copper foil method). Students will learn a brief history of stained glass, pick out a pattern, learn to cut glass, put together a panel using copper foil, and solder their panel. The class will be (4) two-hour sessions. The 4th Annual Carnaval de Mardi Gras & Gumbo Cook-Off, Saturday, February 7, 2015, from 5-9 p.m. presented by the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation (VFHP). The VFHP is accepting teams for the gumbo cook-off now. In addition to bragging rights and trophies, the first place winner will be awarded a $200 cash price. The entry fee for the cook-off is $50 prior to January 30 and includes admittance for three team members to the carnival. Admission is $10 for adults and includes gumbo and $5 for children and includes unlimited children’s activities. The River Kids Free After-School Art Program Spring Semester will begin on January 29, 2015. Open to any child in 1st through 6th grade, the program will accept 60 students for the class on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:00 pm through April 23, 2015. It will expose creativity through drawing, painting, crafts, collage, ceramics, sculpture and many more exciting techniques. Experienced and accredited educators Karen Biedenharn and Regina Renot Mattei plan and teach each class. The program is free, but will require a full semester commitment from the parents.
