December 2017 10th Annual “Holly Days” Arts and Crafts Show Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the historic SCH Auditorium. “Holly Days” will feature a room full of quality vendors showcasing their arts and crafts, plus local talent will entertain the attendees. 29th Annual Over the River Run
(2017), Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 8 a.m. at
the Old Mississippi River Bridge located at I-20 and
Washington Street.
This unique run follows a scenic course heading west across
the Mississippi River to Delta, Louisiana and then returns
back to the finish line. The event includes a 5-mile run,
5-mile walk, and a one-mile fun run for kids. Complimentary
entertainment, fun and refreshments for all runners, walkers
and volunteers will follow the race in the Ameristar Delta
Point parking lot. Musical entertainment will be provided by
the party band, Slaphappy. Registration is open now. The
entry fees are $25 Individual, $15 Kids Registration (10 &
under), $75 Family pre-race registration (limit of 5), and
$100 Corporate/Civic Club Team Pre-race fee (3-5 members)
through October 1st. Late fees will apply to entries that
are postmarked after October 1st. The first 500 registered
participants will receive an official Over the River Run
T-shirt in a special goodie bag filled with specialty items

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.3 million in grants the Commission will award in 2017-2018 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. These funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, the huge variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas. River Kids Free After School Art Program Fall Semester begins August 24, 2017. Open to any child in 1st through 6th grade, the program accepts 60 students for the class on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:00 p.m. for the thirteen-week program. It exposes creativity through drawing, painting, crafts, collage, ceramics, sculpture and many more exciting techniques. Download vendor application form. July 2017 Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest, July 10-14, 2017. The contest is open to kids ages 11-13. Admission is free and participants are required to meet July 10-14 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. Students will be guided by art instructor Karen Biedenharn to complete their posters. Three winners will be chosen by judges for cash prizes. Posters are evaluated on the following three criteria: originality, artistic merit, and expression of the theme. All work must be original and completed only by the student participant. This workshop will teach the student how to build a small stained glass panel using the Tiffany style (copper foil method). Each class will be painting in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. In addition to artist facts and a touch of art history throughout the lesson, students receive a handout on the artist. Nancy Mitchell believes anyone can learn to draw and be creative. However, in today’s world not many people have time for weekly art classes. Each three hour class is based on a painting she designs to mimic the style of a renowned artist. The step-by-step process enables each student to recreate the painting, adding their personal style. describes the history, conditions and impact of Lebanese
immigration nationally, offering a framework in which to

This grant is a portion of the $1.5 million in grants the Commission will award in 2016-2017 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. These funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, the huge variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas.
