Included in the festivities, SCHF is very proud to present the third annual “Landy Teller Champion for Culture and the Arts Award.” SCHF is very proud to present the third-annual “The Landy Teller Champion for Culture and the Arts Award” to Janis Koestler for her contributions to culture and the arts in Vicksburg. Janis is the new Administrative Assistant at the SCHF and has been a long-term volunteer. In 2016, an anonymous gift was made in memory of Landy Teller. This gift was meant to start an endowment that would fund an award to be presented to an individual who contributes to culture and the arts in Vicksburg. This award will be presented at the annual meeting. “Landy Teller was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation and in the early days when there were just a few of us who believed in the crazy notion that you could turn a block of old buildings into a cultural center that could support itself, he was a rock,” said Nancy Bell, President of SCHF Board. “He believed that it needed to be done and could be done and because his counsel was so well respected, he was able to encourage those people who we needed in order to make the project a success, to get on board. Landy was always available to answer legal questions, to write contracts, or to provide whatever support he could to all of our directors. He always had an encouraging word for our staff. We would not be where we are today without the leadership of Landy Teller.” For more information or to make reservations, please call 601.631.2997 or email info@southernculture.org. Press release. SCHF Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant. The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation has been awarded a $11,400 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.4 million in grants the Commission will award in 2019-2020 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to support arts organizations as well as arts activities and festivals around the state through grant-making,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “These funds help broaden the reach of arts by educating our communities about Mississippi’s enduring creative legacy and offering arts experiences and performances to people in nearly every area of the state.”
Among the numerous activities scheduled throughout the year, these funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, a variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas.
