The “Landy Teller Champion for Culture and the Arts Award” for 2021 was presented to Nancy Bell at the on December 16th, 2022 in the SCHC Convent Chapel. Nancy has a long history with SCHF. She negotiated with the Sisters of Mercy to purchase the block of buildings and optioned the property to give us enough time to find the funds to purchase. Nancy agreed to personally take care of the upkeep on the property during this transition. She helped establish a committee to develop the property into the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation (SCHF) and then worked with that committee to develop plans for the property. She has been a member of the SCHF Board of Directors since 1994, and president of the board for over 14 years. Over the years, Nancy has helped with grant writing, rehab projects, fundraisers, membership and so much more. Nancy has been the director of the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation since 1983 and has been an active in community organizations for all of that time. We appreciate all of her dedication to the SCHF and are excited to honor her with this most special award. Press release. Photos.
In 2016, an anonymous gift was made in memory of Landy Teller. This gift was meant to start an endowment that would fund an award to be presented to an individual who contributes to culture and the arts in Vicksburg. This award will be presented at the annual meeting. “Landy Teller was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation and in the early days when there were just a few of us who believed in the crazy notion that you could turn a block of old buildings into a cultural center that could support itself, he was a rock,” said Nancy Bell, President of SCHF Board. “He believed that it needed to be done and could be done and because his counsel was so well respected, he was able to encourage those people who we needed in order to make the project a success, to get on board. Landy was always available to answer legal questions, to write contracts, or to provide whatever support he could to all of our directors. He always had an encouraging word for our staff. We would not be where we are today without the leadership of Landy Teller.”

The River Kids Free After-School Art Program. The spring semester began on January 28, 2021. Open to any child in 1st through 6th grade, the class will meet on Thursdays from 3:45-5 p.m. for the thirteen week program. Our numbers will be limited this semester due to the COVID-19 regulations. SCHF will be following all COVID-19 regulations, orders and guidance from CDC. Space is limited and reservations are required.
The River Kids Program is designed to encourage children to discover and develop their creative talents. It will expose creativity through drawing, painting, crafts, collage, ceramics, sculpture and many more exciting techniques. Experienced and accredited educators plan and teach each class.
The program is free, but will require a full semester commitment from the parents.
It will be filled on a first come, first served basis. To register, call the Southern Cultural Heritage Center business office at (601) 631-2997 or email info@southernculture.org.
This free after-school program is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the generous support of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation individual and corporate members, the City of Vicksburg, and various appropriations. SCHF Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant. The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation has been awarded a $11,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.4 million in grants the Commission will award in 2020-2021 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. “The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to support arts organizations as well as arts activities and festivals around the state through grant-making,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “These funds help broaden the reach of arts by educating our communities about Mississippi’s enduring creative legacy and offering arts experiences and performances to people in nearly every area of the state.” Among the numerous activities scheduled throughout the year, these funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, a variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas. Press release. For information from the Mississippi Arts Commission, contact Anna Ehrgott, Communications Director, 601.359.6546 or aehrgott@arts.ms.gov.
