“The Landy Teller Champion for Culture & the Arts Award” for 2022 was presented to Jack Burns on December 16th, 2022 in the SCHC Convent Chapel at the SCHF December board meeting and Christmas party. Jack Burns, a former west coast resident and retired cement industry worker is a very active volunteer in the theater and the arts. He has presented dozens of theatrical performances at The Vicksburg and then The Strand over the last decade. Jack’s various positions make him a solver of problems of all kinds. He brings that approach and a lot of energy to all he tackles. Jack has devoted much of his time over the last few years to volunteering at SCHF and even working in the office when needed. We appreciate all his dedication to the SCHF and are excited to honor him with this most special award. Press release.
In 2016, an anonymous gift was made in memory of Landy Teller. This gift was meant to start an endowment that would fund an award to be presented to an individual who contributes to culture and the arts in Vicksburg. This award will be presented at the annual meeting. “Landy Teller was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation and in the early days when there were just a few of us who believed in the crazy notion that you could turn a block of old buildings into a cultural center that could support itself, he was a rock,” said Nancy Bell, President of SCHF Board. “He believed that it needed to be done and could be done and because his counsel was so well respected, he was able to encourage those people who we needed in order to make the project a success, to get on board. Landy was always available to answer legal questions, to write contracts, or to provide whatever support he could to all of our directors. He always had an encouraging word for our staff. We would not be where we are today without the leadership of Landy Teller.”

“More Than a Painting” Art Workshop with Nancy Mitchell - Tuesday, May 10, 2022, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Nancy Mitchell says, “Come paint a Picasso painting with me! Does it matter if a line is a little off? No, because it is Picasso! We will have fun painting Picasso's, “The Cock of the Liberation.” Hope to see you there!” Classes suit both artists and beginners. Nancy Mitchell believes anyone can learn to draw and be creative. However, in today’s world not many people have time for weekly art classes. This class is based on a painting she designs to mimic the style of a renowned artist. The step-by-step process enables each student to recreate the painting, adding their personal style. Students also learn basics about composition and color mixing. In addition to artist facts and a touch of art history throughout the lesson, students receive a handout on the artist. The students leave with a finished art piece to hang in their home at the end of their class. Nancy Mitchell has been teaching art for 37 years. As an educator and artist, she practices a variety of media including basic drawing, batik workshops and charcoal. Registration is $45/SCHF Members and $50/Non-Members. SCHF Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant. The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation has been awarded a $13,300 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.4 million in grants MAC awarded in Fiscal Year 2022 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
““The state’s arts community has displayed such resiliency during tumultuous times, and we are very pleased to provide support to these worthy organizations,” said Sarah Story, executive director of MAC. “These funds will help organizations recover from the past year and build upon their successes for future arts-based programming. MAC awards annual grants to organizations in nearly every area of the state, helping broaden the reach of arts to serve the state’s diverse population.”
The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization, is committed to preserving the history and architecture of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, while providing all citizens with the opportunity to experience cultural, educational, and artistic programs. Among the numerous activities scheduled throughout the year, these funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, a variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas.
The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency serving more than two million people through grants and special initiatives that enhance communities, assist artists and arts organizations, promote arts education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. The display is open to the public on these dates, Monday through Friday, from 8-11:30 a.m. and from 2-5 p.m. Parking is available in the courtyard parking lot by the office entrance.
Chester Martin is a free-lance artist from Vicksburg, Mississippi. He specializes in watercolor and acrylic paintings of wildlife, seascapes, and rural landscapes. He was born and raised in Texas and spent most of his early years along the Gulf of Mexico, where he explored the bays and made sketches of fish and other animals found along the beaches. He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University and retired as a Research Wildlife Biologist from the U.S. Army Engineer Research & Development Center in Vicksburg. He specialized in coastal fisheries as an undergraduate and worked summer jobs for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Galveston and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Marine Lab in Rockport. This gave him the opportunity to study coastal animals in their natural habitat. Chester is a member of the Vicksburg Art Association and numerous conservation organizations. In 2012, he was recognized as a “Champion of Conservation” by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. He was featured as a “Mississippi Favorite Artist” for four years at the MS Medical Association Annual Conference in Biloxi. In 2018, he was awarded the prestigious “Jay N.’Ding’ Darling Award for Wildlife Stewardship through Art” by The Wildlife Society. He has illustrated several books, technical papers, and magazine articles on fish and wildlife. Chester has a passion for the sea and creatures found in ocean waters. The paintings on display in the “Art Beneath the Sea” Exhibit represent species that he either caught or closely observed during his studies and fishing trips to the Gulf Coast. All paintings displayed are original acrylics. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, call the SCHF office at 601.631.2997. Press release.
